This weekend my family is gathering to attend the wedding of one of my nephews. Amidst all the complexities and stresses that weddings spawn, marriage is still an incredibly important and joyful institution.
It was with concern though, that I heard about a group of Lutheran seminarians from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, who along with pastors and other church leaders stated that they reject marriage by any definition as normative for sexual relationships.
When will the slide into biblical untruth and immorality stop in the church? These kind of pronouncements are what we expect from our larger culture, but when the church begins to look and sound like the larger culture the church is in danger of no longer being the church of Jesus Christ.
If as Christians we still confess the Bible to be God’s word and the sole authority for our faith and life then we must listen carefully to Jesus’ own words which affirm marriage as a blessing for a man and a woman as they come together:
“Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” – Matthew 19:4-6
Marriage is not easy and there many cloudy days, but God who is faithful has promised to bless marriage and to restore the joy of life together. This can when Christ is present in a marriage bringing to a man and woman His forgiveness and grace. In Christ we receive forgiveness and can share that peace with one another.
I look forward to celebrating the marriage of my nephew and his wife to be. May they, as well as all who have come together and will come together in marriage know the blessing which God desires for them in Christ in marriage.
