How do we see ourselves?

Image result for looking in the mirrorWhen you look in the mirror what do you see? Do you see the pimple, mole, scar or wrinkle? Or do you see the person beyond the imperfections?

What do you see when you take a look at your church? Do you see all the imperfections, limitations and short-comings? Or do you see the community beyond?

It’s easy to see what isn’t and God certainly knows all that we are not and yet God’s word reminds us of how God has changed that.

Peter wrote this to the church (1 Peter 1):

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

We are people born again to a living hope through water and the word (Baptism) and we have an incredible future that is assured through faith in Christ. Even so, there is much of life that weighs us down and shoves us into the toilet.

Peter was writing to Christians and congregations who were being persecuted, encouraging them to remember what God had done for them in Christ. Peter didn’t want them to get stuck in the present trials, but to look beyond to what God was doing.

How would you describe who we are as a congregation and what God is doing? Here’s my take on it:

Trinity ELC…

  • Broken and imperfect…
  • Called and gathered…
  • Forgiven and forgiving…
  • To live life together under Christ…
  • To bear witness to Christ…
  • To extend the mercy of Christ…
  • To be a home for the homeless – the body of Christ for all!

What do you think? Remember to look beyond to what God sees in you and in us because of Christ.
