Lenten Devotion: Believing in tough times

In conversation with his disciples Jesus declares that Lazarus is dead and not simply asleep. Both sisters greet him by saying, “If you had been here, our brother would not have died.” They hesitate to allow him to open the tomb because of the stench of the dead body. Jesus responds to their uncertainty, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

Why can we only see God’s glory when we truly believe?

Have there been times in your life when you have thought God’s presence has been delayed too long?

Many people struggle with God’s failure to act in a particular way. “Why does God allow bad things to happen if God is good or all powerful?” There are no logical answers to such questions and these questions remain asked and unanswered even when people take God out of the formula. Our calling is not to provide logical answers, but to bear witness to our faith: And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). It is here that we can find peace and trust that one day all will be revealed.
