Lenten Devotion: Empowered

Even with three years of time with Jesus under their belts I’m sure the disciples felt overwhelmed with the mission he had given them: you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

For many of us it’s hard enough to speak our faith to ourselves in the mirror than to think of sharing it with someone else.

How is it possible for us to share the message of repentance and forgiveness with our families, neighbours, co-workers, fellow students…?

Jesus promised his disciples, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…

It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can share the message of God’s love in Christ, calling people to repentance and offering them the forgiveness of sins they need through Christ.

However, where does this Holy Spirit come from? Do I need to go to some special Holy Spirit meeting?

When each of us was baptized we were given the gift of the Holy Spirit which came to us as God’s Word was spoken over us in baptism: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Every time we receive again the Word of God through preaching, the Lord’s Supper, in reading and studying God’s Word and even in that Word received from a brother or sister, the Holy Spirit is there to strengthen and empower us in our witness.

What has God’s Word done for you in your life? This is the point of witness that the Holy Spirit has already given you.

Go in peace, be bold and allow the Holy Spirit to speak God’s Word of repentance and forgiveness through your life.
