“When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him“ – Matthew 1:24
We all make decisions. If you’ve started to read this you’ve made a decision to pay attention to it, at least this far. You also made decisions yesterday and you will make decisions today and tomorrow. Decision-making is a fact of life.
On what basis though, will you make decisions? Most often, it is through some form of reasoning or maybe even feelings.
Joseph was going to make a decision about Mary based on the reasoning and the belief that pregnancy outside of marriage was wrong according to the Law. However, his reasoning was softened by his feelings for Mary and so he decided to divorce her quietly, that is, until an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.
It was the angel that spoke God’s Word into his life situation and then Joseph was confronted with the decision to either ignore it or follow it.
Joseph could have ignored the dream, calling it just that: “a dream,” but instead, Joseph believed it to be true and he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.
As we engage God’s Word every day and each Sunday, God speaks into our lives, calling us to repent and believe. Through the Word, the Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts to believe that God can do what He has promised: forgiveness of sins, new life and salvation. Every word of Scripture speaks to God’s promise made real in Christ.
Christmas is no fairy tale, but is the celebration of God coming into our lives to be with us, to redeem us and to send us out as witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. May the Holy Spirit move you to repent , believe and to live within that faith.
