Chewing the fat

CalNashOne of things I didn’t get to do when I commuted from St. Albert was attend the weekly Men’s Breakfast. However, since moving to Ponoka it has become a regular part of my week.

Every Monday morning at 7:30 am, men gather at the CalNash Ag Event Centre just south of Ponoka on Highway 2A. On long weekends they meet at the A&W since the centre is closed.

My first Monday there I looked at the menu and noticed the special was a “Newfie” breakfast. This delicacy consisted of eggs, toast, hash-browns and a slab of fried bologna. I had to order this fat-filled breakfast at least once.

“Chewing the fat” is what these men do as they sit together and eat their varied breakfasts. There is no agenda except the one that seems to unfold as the men talk about whatever seems to come to mind. Sometimes we venture into biblical and theological topics, but more often its just about life.

Some might conclude that it’s just a waste of time, but I believe it’s a place where relationships are grown. It is through relationships like these that Christ comes to surprise us every once in awhile.

I’d like to invite you to join us in this journey of life together and perhaps you too, can be surprised by Christ.
