Last week I took my regular turn at leading worship at the Ponoka Care Centre Auxiliary. There I met two young women of the Mormon faith who were assisting with porting patients. They were from Utah and were on an 18 month mission in Alberta. Most young men and women of the LDS Church tithe two years of their life to this mission.
Two years sounds like a long time, but I consider myself as having been on a fifty-five year mission and counting. When I was baptized, the gathered church of God said to me words similar to these: We welcome you into the Lord’s family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, a child of the same heavenly Father, and a worker with us in the kingdom of God.
Nowhere in that sentence is the word “mission,” but the implication is there: a worker with us in the kingdom of God.
This coming Saturday morning our congregation is gathering from 9 am to noon to reflect on God’s mission and what God is sending us out to be about this coming year. It may involve some of the same things we are currently doing, but it may also include some new possibilities.
But how many of you consider yourself to be a missionary? How many missionaries will show up this Saturday?
I give God thanks for the missionaries of this congregation but more importantly, for the God who went on a mission to live, die and rise so that we might have life both now and forever.
Every follower of Jesus is on a perpetual mission, God’s mission. We find direction for that mission as we gather together as the body of Christ. So come and join us this Saturday as we discern together God’s mission for us as Trinity ELC.
