The Invitation

follow-meThe congregation I worship at when I’m not in Ponoka is running an event called “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” It sounds like a surprise event and if you’re like me, you may not like surprises.

That made me wonder what Peter, Andrew, James and John thought when Jesus came along and invited them to, Come and follow me. Were they pleasantly surprised or was there some worry in their hearts?

Those surprising words represent the invitation that Jesus makes to each one of us. So how did you respond? Have you followed like the disciples leaving things behind? Or has your following more like the crowds who followed only as long as they felt comfortable? Or perhaps the question is “Have you responded at all?” Are you still too worried to follow?

What does it look like to respond to Jesus’ invitation? Are only some people called and able to follow? Do only some people have to leave behind the priorities of work, family or whatever?

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus? Is that the same as being baptized or being a Lutheran or being a Christian?

Jesus invites you to come and follow and to explore these questions this coming week.
