Happy New Year vs Blessed Eternity

HobbsUnlike Calvin, I am far from perfect and enjoy opportunities for new starts. They give me renewed energy for daily life.

The problem is that it doesn’t take long before the old ways overtake the new ways and the new ways start looking like the old. So why even try or go through the effort of making New Year’s resolutions if nothing really changes?

Jesus said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

Based on human effort our “home improvements” may feel like we’re moving ahead. In the midst of such “progress” we eventually discover that we’ve also created massive problems.

In the midst of this tainted progress the promise Jesus makes to us is that by living life with God through faith we can tackle both what holds us back and experience what can truly bring life.

Life with God always begins with repentance where we turn away from our old sinful ways and then look to God through faith in Christ for a new way forward.

It is through this cycle of daily repentance and living life with God that we find our lives transformed and the world around us renewed. Martin Luther referred to this as daily dying and rising.

It is by living life with God that God’s kingdom comes and our resolutions for a happy New Year are transformed into an everlasting life under God’s reign. Following this path will lead us from a fragile happy new year to a blessed eternity with God.
