I still remember that six-year-old’s dream filled with snakes and the fear that led me to the foot of my parents’ bed. As a young armed forces recruit I remember the fear of thinking I would drown if I dove into the pool one more time. I remember the fear of bears that grips me every time I go camping. I remember the fear of dying when I have been very sick. I remember the fear of not being able to provide for my family when I lost my job.
Fear is all around us and yet so are the promises of God.
“Do not be afraid,” Jesus said to his disciples on many occasions. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul (Matthew 10:28). “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom (Luke 12:32). Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27).
We need this Word of encouragement in the midst of our many fears and it is available to us as we gather with God’s people in worship and small groups and as we read the Word of God in scripture. In these ways God comes to us to remind us that we are not alone; that we do not need to be afraid.
So come join us this week that God may encourage you in the midst of your fears.
